Walmart Selling $10 Androids

by nadum 18 Nov , 2015

According to new reports, Walmart is selling two LG smartphones for just $9.82 – the Sunrise L15G and Lucky LG16.

While you shouldn’t expect high-end specs on these budget smartphones, the Lucky LG16 has some better specs than the original iPhone, and both devices are more powerful on paper than Microsoft’s cheapest feature phone – the $20 Nokia 105. The Sunrise L15G and Lucky LG16 are GSM and CDMA variants of the same device, and they feature a 3.8-inch 480×320 LCD display, 1.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 200 SoC, 3 megapixel rear camera, 512 MB of RAM, 1,540 mAh battery, and 4 GB of storage from its included microSD card with “up to 1.15 GB” of usable space. The smartphones run Android 4.4 KitKat, and do not support 4G LTE. This pricing is part of Walmart’s “rollback” pricing, and is expected to only be available for a limited time. The LG Lucky LG16 is currently out of stock at the time of writing, but the LG Sunrise L15G is still available.

A $10 smartphone may sound too good to be true, and as the phones are tied to US pre-paid mobile carrier TracFone, it may be. Earlier this year, TracFone faced enforcement action from the Federal Communications Commission for keeping phones locked to their networks despite promising to unlock them. TracFone had promised to unlock phones enrolled in the FCC’s Lifeline program, but after the Enforcement Bureau’s investigation, had agreed to make all of its devices unlockable. This transition to unlockable phones is expected to be completed by the end of 2016.
