THE Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress on Monday called on President Muhammadu Buhari to implement the recommendations of the Professor Chidi Odinkalu-led panel of inquiry into the violence that rocked the state before and during the 2015 general elections.
The APC State Chairman, Dr. Davies Ikanya, who made this call during a special interdenominational memorial service tagged ‘Rivers Black Day’ in honour of scores that were reportedly killed as a result of the politically motivated violence in Rivers.
Ikanya was addressing thousands of APC supporters who streamed to the Port Harcourt Club in GRA and the party secretariat on Forces Avenue to hold a memorial service in honour of victims of the election violence in the state in an event tagged ‘Black Monday’.
The state APC chairman told party supporters, who were all in black attire, that Odinkalu panel set up by the then governor of the state, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, was to investigate the killings in the state.
“The Chidi Odinkalu panel set up by the Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi administration to investigate the killings in Rivers State has concluded its report and submitted to the appropriate authorities.
“As part of the honour that can be done to the memories of these innocent citizens, I, on behalf of the APC, Rivers State, demand the implementation of the recommendation of the panel.
- “I also wish to appeal to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, to make good his promise to bring the masterminds of these senseless murders to justice,” Ikanya stressed.
