The rivers state doctors under the aegis of the Nigerian Medical Association, Rivers State Chapter, today staged a peaceful mass protest against the incessant kidnapping of doctors which lately has reached unprecedented numbers with an average of 1.7 doctors kidnapped every month.
The last year had 21 successful kidnaps of Drs across the state, excluding unsuccessful attempts and so far this year there has been 2 kidnaps and 2 attempted kidnaps one of which resulted in an almost fatal shooting of the doctor which required a 6hour operation to save his life.
The protesting doctors paid a visit to the state office of the Directorate Security Services and The Police Officers quarters were they were addressed by the state director of the DSS and the Commissioner of police who gave assurances that the security services were on top of the situation to arrest the situation and safeguard life and property.
They were also addressed by the commissioner of health @ the Braithwaite memorial specialist hospital (where a doctor had on the 13th lost his life to the Lassa fever menace in the course of duty).
