The commandant general, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC), Mr Abdullahi Gana Muhammadu has linked his approval for the immediate deployment of One Assistant Commandant General (ACG), 4 Commandants and 2,000 personnel for the re-run elections in Rivers State, to ensuring effective security management.
A statement issued by NSCDC Public Relations Officer, Mr Emmanuel Okeh, explained that the CG directed the Assistant Commandant General in charge of Zone E Owerri, Alhaji Abdullahi Lapai, to relocate to Port-Harcourt to oversee the operations in Rivers State re-run election with 4 Commandants from the Zone and 2,000 personnel from neighbouring Commands to complement the personnel of the Rivers State Command on 19 March, 2016.
According to the statement, directing the immediate movement of the instructed officers , Muhhammadu Gana noted that the Corps has significant role to play before, during and after elections.
The Commandant General advised political parties and political actors involved in the exercise to avoid the use of fowl language capable of inciting crisis during campaign in order to guide against activities of hoodlums and thugs.
The statement disclosed that Abdullahi emphasised, that as the lead Agency in the protection of Critical Infrastructure, adequate personnel will be deployed around the various locations to protect the nation’s infrastructure in the State from being vandalized by saboteurs.
His words, ‘’I trust that the strong presence of the NSCDC personnel with other Security Operatives in the Rivers State re-run election will bring about a hitch-free election, as all focus will be on the election in the State. ‘’
To this end, he urged political actors to abide by the rules of the game, and parents to caution their wards to desist from being used by desperate politicians as thugs to disrupt the electoral processes, as anyone caught fomenting trouble will be dealt with decisively in line with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
