A civil society organisation, the Integrity Group, has called on Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, to key into President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption crusade and recover all state funds allegedly looted by the Chibuike Amaechi administration. The group, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt yesterday by its Executive Director, Livingstone Wechie, called on Wike to launch an “Operation Recover All Stolen Monies belonging to Rivers people,” adding that the government would have the support of civil society organisations.
Wechie also said the state government should take the challenge issued by some indicted person and prosecute them immediately.
“We strongly charge the state government, having also been severally challenged by those indicted to go to court, to immediately march words with action and take a queue from the unrelenting anti-corruption efforts by the Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government by replicating same here in the state by going after and prosecuting all those who stole our common wealth with impunity in keeping with the prosecutorial powers of the state so as to give full life to the government white paper of the Justice George Omereji Judicial Commission of Enquiry, because any time lost now in this fight may never be recovered,” he said.
On the $150 million allegedly spent by Amaechi to sponsor the All Progressives Congress (APC), Wechie said, “Unfortunately, both Rotimi Amaechi and his handlers in their futile effort to respond to the $150 million among other stolen state funds have consistently misrepresented facts on all the embezzlement spree as the bare-faced evidence and incontrovertible facts in the public domain continue to stare them sharply in the face.”
He said the state should give approval to interested persons in the legal profession for fiat to prosecute suspects.
“As a lead watchdog, we urge the Attorney general of Rivers State to give speedy approval to interested free citizens within the legal profession for fiat to privately prosecute all principal suspects, both individually and severally who were indicted in the government white paper in connivance with the Amaechi administration,” he said.
He said the Integrity Group “having every needed evidence on the various stolen funds running into several billions of naira, is ready and interested in taking up a fiat, particularly with the reported provoking revelations and confessions by some northern governors pointing to Rotimi Amaechi sponsoring their elections with the common wealth stolen from Rivers State, so we can expand our development and revenue base.”
