In what seemed like all hope was lost in registering Nigeria’s name on the medals table in the on-going Rio Olympics which is gradually coming to an end, the nation’s under 23 football team succeeded in putting smiles on the faces of Nigerians when they beat their opponent Honduras in the third place match of the men’s football category to clinch the prized bronze medal.
It seemed as though the Eagles came into the game with an aggressive hunger for victory when they won their counterparts with three goals to two. Umar Sadiq entered his name on the score sheet when he opened the goals harvest in the 34th minute. The harvest continued when Aminu Umar scored in the 49th minute barely after the second half kicked off. Seven minutes later, Umar Sadiq sealed the victory by finding the back of the net of their opponent.
Their dream of winning a medal for the country was almost dashed when the Honduras team suddenly awoke from their slumber.
The Honduras team must have been wondering what hit them that made them concede three straight goals. Striving to win back some respect they showed some aggression by putting one back on the Nigerian side through Anthony Lozano in the 71th minute reducing the tally. Trying to get back on the game and steal the victory, Honduras through Marcelo Pereira found the Nigerian net again in the 86th minute. This did not deter team Nigeria as they held on and eventually won the game.
The nation’s olympic team may have had a poor outing so far, but this feat would serve as a consolation prize. And a sad reminder to the country’s sports ministry to employ extra and timely efforts to sports development in the country.
