Lagos at 50: Anniversary’ll project black race – Soyinka

Nobel Laureate,  Professor Wole Soyinka has said that the forthcoming 50th Years’ Anniversary celebration of Lagos State would be used to project the black race at home and in diaspora.This came as Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, yesterday, inaugurated a 12-man committee at Lagos House, Ikeja, chaired by Soyinka to organise a befitting Golden Jubilee, 50th Years’ Anniversary celebration of the state, scheduled for next year. Other members of the committee are: Mr. Raheed Gbadamosi, so-Chairman, Hon Habeeb Fasinro, Chief Oluwole Cole, Mrs Sarah Boulous, Mr Abimbola Obafunwa.

Others include: Prof, (Mrs) Senapon Bakare, Mrs. Chika Balogun, Mr. Folarin Coker, Prof Ademola Abass, Mr. Bolanle Austen Peter and Mrs Olufumilayo Balogun Soyinka in his remark, said the celebration of Lagos at 50 would afford an excellent opportunity for the state to identify with the triumph, losses and experience of the Black Race at home and in the diaspora.

According to the renowned Professor of Literature,”If Well Selected” would work assiduously to ensure that Lagos has the most befitting of the celebration.

He likened the celebration to that of the Black in the Mediterranean Blue”, saying, “It would be used to project the black race not just for the colonial experience and slave trade but also as cultural people” Soyinka thanked the governor for the opportunity and promised a befitting celebration, saying Lagos State deserved a befitting celebration being what it is to Nigeria.

While charging the committee to work assiduously to make the celebration a significant landmark for the state, Ambode, noted that Lagos State is the smallest, oldest and the most populated state in the federation.
