Kogi: INEC not ‘aware’ of Audu’s death

by nadum 23 Nov , 2015

The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has claimed ignorance of the death of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in last Saturday’s gubernatorial election in Kogi state, Prince Abubakar Audu.

The onus is on the APC to immediately notify the commission about the death of its candidate. While the party has announced Audu’s demise on several of its social media platforms, it has not formally informed INEC of the situation.

APC has also not made any request as to whether to be granted some days to conduct a fresh primary to pick a new candidate, or to now adopt its running mate in the polls, James Faleke as its substantive candidate or even to demand an outright cancellation of the elections.

INEC however said although it heard the ‎news of Audu’s passing just like most other Nigerians, it was nevertheless meticulously studying the situation with a view to coming up with an appropriate position that would be fair, lawful and acceptable to all.

Director in charge of Voter Education, Publicity, Civil Society and Gender Liaison at the Commission, Mr Oluwole Osaze-Uzi‎ told our correspondent in a chat that INEC would make its position public as soon as the issue is addressed.

INEC had since Sunday commenced extensive deliberations on the highly-contentious issue. During one of such meetings on Monday in Abuja, news reportedly filtered in that Audu had “resurrected” , forcing the commission to pause and get in touch with its officials in Lokoja the state capital.
