Google Glass Team Working on New Gadgets

by nadum 18 Nov , 2015

The revamped Google Glass project – now Project Aura – is working on 3 prototype devices, according to reports.
Citing people with knowledge of Glass plans, The Information reported on Monday that the Project Aura team is working on new wearables with and without screens. According to The Information‘s sources, there have been three versions of a new head-mounted wearable prototype, though they may be consolidated to two devices. One device features a screen, and is targeted at enterprise users, while the other two rely on audio and scrap the display. One of the audio-based devices is targeted for “sport” users. The Information describes these audio devices as “headphones worn on your face.” It is unclear how the audio headset would differ from a Bluetooth headset or headphones at this time.

The Project Aura team has been developing these new prototypes under Nest Labs CEO Tony Fadell. The new name for the Glass team was revealed in September when the company started hiring engineers, software developers, and project managers form Amazon’s hardware research division Lab126. Many of these engineers worked on Amazon’s Fire smartphone. Aura is focused on the next incarnation of Glass, as well as other wearables. The team is still aiming for a 2016 release for the next-generation Glass eyewear, and according to The Wall Street Journal, the company is quietly testing a new version of Glass with healthcare, manufacturing, and energy companies. Google has not commented on its Glass and Aura plans at this time.
