Former Enyimba and Kaduna United goalkeeper, Chinedu Agwu, is dead.He died a few hours into the New Year, after a protracted illness, close family sources revealed.
“Chinedu finally passed out today after a protracted illness,” a family member who identified himself as Chijioke, stated.
The deceased, who was 30 years old, made waves while at Kaduna United but was denied first team opportunity after an ambitious move to Enyimba.
Having recorded a number of high profile deaths in 2015, many had wished that the Nigerian sporting world would be spared much heartache in 2016 but that seems not to be the case with a death already recorded from the first day.
A former teammate of Agwu at Kaduna United, Balogun Kayode, while stating that he was yet to hear of the death of the goalkeeper, said he was aware of the illness.
“I have not heard that Agwu is dead but I know he was very sick, that is really bad news in the year,” the ex-Kaduna united star told PREMIUM TIMES.
In 2015, the football family bade goodbye to the likes of Sam Henshaw Ibiam popularly known as The Black Magnet during his playing days and Wilfred Agbonavbare.
While Henshaw passed away at a ripe age of 90 years, Agbonavbare passed away far younger early in 2015 at a Spanish hospital, following a protracted battle with cancer.
He was a member of Nigeria’s U-21 Mexico 1983 Flying Eagles, 1984 AFCON silver medalist and 1994 AFCON gold medalist.
Also, former Heartland and Kano Pillars forward, Abdul Haruna, also died in 2015 after collapsing on the pitch during a friendly football match between Kano professionals and a selected amateur team in Kano. He was 27 years old.
Another high profile death was that of David Faramola Oniya, a Nigerian footballer who played for Malaysia Premier League club T-Team as a defender.
On June 13, Oniya died after collapsing on the pitch in Malaysia during a friendly between his club, T-Team, and Kelantan.
