Dembele facing lengthy ban after FA charge

The Belgium international is reportedly facing a suspension of up to 10 matches while both Tottenham and Chelsea face fines for failing to control their players on Monday.

The Football Association has confirmed Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele has been charged following his eye gouging of Chelsea striker Diego Costa.

The Belgium international faces a lengthy suspension, as the FA stated that his actions deserve a sterner punishment than the normal three-match ban for violent conduct.

The former Fulham man has until 18:00 BST on Thursday to appeal the charge, with reports suggesting he could be suspended for up to 10 matches.

“Mousa Dembele has been charged for an alleged act of violent conduct which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video during the same game,” a statement read.

“The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder was involved in an incident with Chelsea’s Diego Costa near the end of the first half.

“Further, it is alleged the player’s behaviour constituted violent conduct in circumstances where the standard punishment of three matches that would otherwise apply is clearly insufficient.”

Both Tottenham and Chelsea have also been charged with failing to control their players after a series of incidents throughout the match, which finished 2-2, thereby ending Spurs’ Premier League title hopes.
