The Deeper Christian Life Ministry has begun the construction of a multi-million naira flyover bridge in Gbagada area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.
This is part of its Corporate Social Responsibility to the Lagos State Government.
Deeper Life, whose General Superintendent is Pastor William Kumuyi is about completing its headquarters church valued over N5 billion in Gbagada believes it will help reduce traffic gridlock.
While Deeper Life provides the funding for the project, the Lagos State Government will provide the technical support.
At a sensitisation programme carried out by the Lagos State Transportation Management Authority, LASTMA on Thursday, residents of Oduwaye and adjourning communities in Gbagada area of Lagos State were urged to cooperate with the contractors handling the project, with government promising to put machinery in motion to decongest traffic in the area.
At the meeting held at the Deeper Life Bible Church in Gbagada, Pastor Kayode Dada of the Deeper Life said the contract had already been awarded to Julius Barger Construction Company and that the project would take off immediately.
He said the flyover would be constructed alongside four-level motor park for worshipers in the cathedral to be able to park their vehicles.
Speaking during the programme, LASTMA Deputy Controller of Operation, Mr. Philip Femi Ogunwale said the construction work was massive and would likely lead to traffic build-up in Gbagada area, saying all through the construction period, LASTMA would deploy men and material resources reduce the hardship.
“This stakeholders’ meeting is to sensitise people in this locality on the proposed bridge to be constructed by the Deeper Life Bible Ministry. The flyover bridge upon completion will ease traffic gridlock in this area as residents will no longer need to access the underground but move via the flyover bridge.
“The traffic gridlock that they normally experience, especially when they have programmes in the Cathedra will no longer be there. Those who have no business in the church will just pass through the bridge and go their way,” he said.
He said that LASTMA had put measures in place to ease traffic congestion in the area during the construction period; even as he enjoined residents to co-operate with LASTMA and the contractors handling the project until the construction was over.
Community Development Association, CDA Chairman of Aroromi/Sawmill, Gbagada, Chief Olukayode Onasanya lauded the project but lamented the poor state of inner routes in the neighbourhood, saying many residents would suffer untold hardship should the construction begin without making the inner route accessible.
Onasanya said: “We are happy about the project because it’s for the development of the area. But, if they want to do it, they have to take care of the access roads too. When it starts and everything is blocked, all motorists going to Araromi, Sawmill, Shoniyi kiniun-Ifa to Ifako will find it difficult to connect their streets.
“If there are access roads like Bakare Dauda street through to Ope Odu, those coming from the express will just pass through that route and will not bother coming here at all. For Shoniyi, there is a route at Yetunde Brown, they will take that place and go to Shoniyi. They will not need passing here at all.”
