Convention: PDP ex-ministers’ forum fails to reach consensus over zoning formula

by nadum 22 Apr , 2016

EFFORTS by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) former ministers from 1999 to 2015, under the umbrella of PDP Former Ministers’ Forum, to reach a consensus on the zoning formula for the selection of its national officers at the forthcoming national convention have failed.

Members of the forum, who met for several hours in Abuja, on Thursday, could not reach a common ground on the matter, especially the position of the national chairman of the party, purported to have been zoned to the North-East.

The meeting was poorly attended unlike the first, where the former ministers strongly kicked against the choice of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as national chairman of the party, before it was prevailed upon by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party.

However, in a  communique read by the chairman of the forum, Mallam Tanimu Turaki, the  meeting called “for transparent and credible congresses and national convention that will be in conformity and in line with the party’s constitution.”

“The ministers’ forum, therefore, recommends that widespread consultations must precede the election of delegates to the convention.

To have delegate that are pre-selected or pre-elected to return preferred candidate to national offices will be seen as perpetration of lack of internal democracy that mortally injured the party in 2015,” the communique read.
