by nadum 26 Dec , 2015

After spending 15 days in the custody of her abductors, Dr.  Alhassan Kadija of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) has regained freedom.
Dr.  Kadija was released in the early hours of Friday, Christmas Day  by her abducted in Port Harcourt,  after spending more than two weeks with the  abductors.

?The Chief Medical Director of the UPTH,  Dr.  Aaron Ejule, who  confirmed  the  release said Dr.  Kadija had since reunited with her family.

?He said: “She was released in the early hours  of this morning (Friday).  We are happy that the colleagues have decided to call off the strike” .

?Dr Ejule however appealed to the  resident doctors to commence work today (Saturday) so as to save lives of people who may be in need of medical attention.

Also speaking, the President of Resident  Doctors,  UPTH,  Dr.  Mike Acho,  said he had directed his  members to  resume work  today (Saturday) following the release of the kidnap Dr Kadija.

Dr.  Acho said: “I have  already directed our  members to resume  work  tomorrow.  We sincerely appreciate the  support of those  who showed concern.

?“The idea of the strike was to show solidarity to our colleague. The idea was not to deny them (patients) healthcare.  We thank God  the whole situation is over. We shall resume work tomorrow by 8am”.

?It would be recalled that the resident doctors last Monday,  embarked on seven days strike over the kidnap of Dr. Kadija. Prior to the strike, the doctors had staged a peaceful protest,  threatening to go on strike,  if she was not freed.
Meanwhile, residents of Port Harcourt City have expressed deep concern about the increasing spate of kidnap cases in Rivers state, noting that if not adequately checked, “the situation may go out of hand because no passes without people are being kidnapped on daily basis”.
