by nadum 26 Aug , 2016

Yet-to-be-identified gunmen have killed and set ablaze two persons in Imo State Polytechnic, Uwuagwo,  in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government  Area of the state (formerly, Michael  Okpara  College  of Agriculture).

The incident reportedly happened in the early hours of Wednesday at a students’ hostel in Mgbirichi, an adjoining town to the campus.

Our correspondent gathered that some hoodlums were said to have attacked and killed Onumajuru Chibueze and his visiting friend, Chris Ukpabi, at the Infinity Hostel.

Onumajuru reportedly worked at the institution’s School of Environmental Sciences as a typist, while Ukpabi has recently graduated from the Department of Office, Technology and Management.

Reacting to the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Polytechnic, Mr. Darlington Oparaocha, said the double murder happened outside the campus.

He confirmed that one of the victims had finished his final exams since 2014, but he had not finished with his clearance exercise.

Oparaocha said, “Whether they (victims) can be called graduates of the Polytechnic, I cannot tell; and whether they were killed by either armed robbers or cultists, I cannot also tell.

“This is because the ugly incident happened in the wee hours of the fateful day.”

He said he was aware of a robbery incident in one of the hostels adjacent to the Infinity Lodge.

Efforts by our correspondent to get more information about Onumajuru from the School of Environmental Sciences proved abortive, as no staff volunteered to talk.

When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Andrew, confirmed the incident.

He said, “We have the report of the inhuman act. Presently, we are investigating the matter, with a view to ascertaining the circumstances that led to the deaths and the subsequent inferno that engulfed the two victims.
