Apologise to Arase, NACJ tells IGP

The National Association of Christian Journalists has called on the acting Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to tender an apology to his predecessor, Solomon Arase, for accusing him of going away with 24 vehicles belonging to the Nigeria Police.

The NACJ stated that the manner in which the new police boss went about the issue showed that his action was a clear witchhunt, adding that the alarm raised by Idris was “unnecessary, unfortunate and disheartening,” as he could have read through the handover note for clarification.

In a statement by its Secretary General, Charles Okhai, the association said it would not hesitate to mobilise a protest for his removal from office if he fails to apologise in due time.

The statement read in part, “We condemn in strong terms Mr. Idris’ undue assault on the impeccable personality of Arase whose reputation as an officer of high intelligence and his integrity has been attested to by President Buhari.

“From every sense of judgement, lbrahim Idris is a wrong choice for the exalted position of the IGP. His approach also shows that he did not even bother to go through the handover note. He should avoid further unnecessary distraction to heat up polity for personal glorification, drop personal animosity, if any, and settle down to do the job he was appointed to do.

“For the interest of the nation and to avoid bad precedent, we unequivocally request the acting IGP to tender an unreserved apology to his former boss, Mr. Solomon Arase.”
