The Chelsea striker has failed to replicate last season’s form in front of goal, leading to speculation regarding his future and relationship with Jose Mourinho.
Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo appears to have ruled out the possibility of Diego Costa returning to the club in January.
Costa, who was recently dropped from the Chelsea starting XI against Tottenham and has struggled for goals so far this season, suggested he was open to a possible move back to Madrid in future, citing former Blues and Atleti team-mate Filipe Luis as an example of a player following the same route.
“I don’t know if I’ll go back to Atletico,” he told Onda Cero. “Life always takes plenty of twists and turns. Look where Filipe Luis is.
“The truth is that I want the best for Atletico, I always cheer them on from afar.”
But, attending the Sports Gala in San Sebastian de los Reyes in Madrid, Cerezo suggested there was little chance of a move for the Chelsea striker when the transfer window opens.
He said: “It’s complicated for Atletico to make signings this winter.”
