‎Edo poll: APC, PDP clash over planned postponement

by nadum 8 Sep , 2016

The All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party have disagreed over the call for the postponement of the Edo State governorship election by the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Security.

This came just as Governor Adams Oshiomhole urged the commission ‎not to shift the date of the election too far, as the APC was ready to “bury the PDP.”

The National Chairman of the commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, had, during a meeting with stakeholders on Wednesday evening, announced that it would need to consult with the security agencies before taking a decision on whether the election would go on as scheduled.

But the state chairman of the opposition PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, who was present at the meeting, described the development as “democracy on trial.”

“As far as I am concerned, this meeting was just called by INEC to tell us that they are not in a position to speak about Edo State election.

“For me, I think democracy is on trial under the present INEC and the present government in Nigeria because from the unfolding events this evening, one can simply say that politicians from all sides of the divide must wake up to the challenge to rescue democracy,” ‎Orbih said.
